I'm a bookseller by trade, and in the book biz, "first thus" can refer to a compilation of older material that's presented as a whole for the first time. In other words, I've been writing and recording my own music for several years but have never made a formal compilation or album until now.

Everything here, every note, every instrument, every mistake, is solely mine. I’m not necessarily proud of that. I would probably stand to get more out my musical ability if I collaborated more with others. What I’ve offered here, or been able to produce on my own to date, is a meager fraction of what I know I have in me.

I’d be honored if anyone took the time to listen to these songs, and immensely pleased if they’re considered to be enjoyable. While any purchases are naturally appreciated, your feedback honestly means much more than monetary compensation. If you like what you hear, or even if you have constructive criticism, I would love to hear from you.

All songs composed and performed by David Hewitt, 2006-2011. Thanks to Jamison Maley for technical assistance, and to Sara Petrous for graphic design.

Interpretive Trail Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

I began writing music when I began playing instruments, which was at around 17. I’ve never had lessons or training, and have never practiced or committed myself enough to think of myself as a bonafide musician. I know my way around a key/fretboard enough to be able to express myself, however, and to develop ideas that I have. I derive utmost fulfillment from creating music that's true to who I am. ... more

Track Name: Time Lapse
Anywhere I land could be my home
The trails are blazed, but to me it's all unknown

Automatic impulse trips the lever
Five hundredths of a second is forever

Ready and waiting
to be taken by surprise
The land, the sky so wide
open, and my eyes

I have come to find these places left behind
I have come to merge with these absences of time

So slow I go
through ebbs and flows
Beached stones I've thrown
come back so slow

So slow I go
New Mexico
Home on these roads
Track Name: Stop Requested
Drive around in circles
Tag along as you will, for awhile

A billion better ways
each of us could be spending this day
but better doesn't pay the fucking bills

Stop fighting, you're fighting
Just be kind and smile
Looks like the rain has finally stopped
Yeah...and the temperature's dropped
and that billboard wasn't there yesterday

Easiest thing in the world
would be to give this little wheel
one turn to the right

On-ramp to the freeway,
run an express right out to Coos Bay,
punch my transfer in the night

But my signal isn't blinking
and I can't tell anyone what I'm thinking

After her shift, awhile back
a lady drove the 14 off the track
deep into the river

Not saying I would ever go that far
but sometimes not so hard
to understand

And I wouldn't presume to speak
but it might have been the first autonomous thing
she'd done in weeks
She was not in service.
